Gas Prices Continue to Drop Nationwide

Gas prices nationwide are under two dollars a gallon and travel experts in Alabama say we haven’t seen the last of falling gas prices.

The state average is around a $1.65 a gallon. That’s about .30 cents less than the state average last year.

In Mobile County, we’re seeing prices as low as $1.49.

When gas prices drop, business blooms at Cleveland the Florist on Old Shell Road.

“I can’t even remember the last time gas prices were this low,” said owner LaNae Denson, as she remembered how just a couple of years ago, gas was over $3 a gallon.

“There was a point where we had a $3500 a month gas bill, which for us, we’re a little business we’re not big box, so yes it was killing us it would affect how many employees we could hire,” she said.

Now, in Mobile, the average cost at the tank is a $1.67 a gallon and plenty of stations are well below that mark.

It’s great news for florists like Denson. Roughly 75 percent of their business is delivery based.

“It’s just great for us! We’re ready for Valentine’s Day and hey it will make the price of roses, I’m hoping in general because of the general charges and the freight charges, come down just a little too so we’ll pass that on to the consumer,” said Denson.

AAA spokesperson Clay Ingram expects prices to fall even more over the next month.

So just how low will they go?

“There’s a good chance we could see it below a $1.50 as far as the state average and so that means seeing some stations a good bit less than that. There have been some wild predictions of gas below $1 a gallon. Honestly, I think that’s very unrealistic,” said Ingram.

The southeast, specifically Alabama, typically sees some of the lowest gas prices in our country partly because we’re so close to major oil refineries.
