First Zika Virus Case Confirmed In Alabama

The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed the first case of the Zika virus in Alabama.

The positive test comes out of Morgan County, just south of Huntsville. The reported positive test comes from an Alabama resident with a travel history to areas where there is an active Zika virus outbreak.

Additionally, the Department of Public Health says they are testing other potential cases in Morgan County.

Infection with the Zika virus causes only mild symptoms in the majority of the cases, but an apparent link to birth defects and other pregnancy-related poor outcomes has been associated with infection during pregnancy. In response to concern about the Zika virus, state agencies and other key stakeholders have been alerted.

There have been recent reports that Zika virus may also be spread through blood transfusion and sexual contact.
