WPMI/WEAR — PENSACOLA, Fla. (WPMI) Family members have been in and out of the home today trying to salvage what they can–you can see toys allover the yard–
We talked to one family member who told us she never imagined something like this would happen to her family.
“She said he heard her daughter and heard them screaming and she said she got up and she doesn’t really know what happened, and the daughter, she tried to kick the window out, and her brother Michael put them under the bed to save them, and she heard the screaming but couldn’t get them out.” said Shrell Gray, the aunt of the 4 children who died in this morning’s house fire.
Gray says her 14-year-old niece and sister are the only ones who made it out alive.
Authorities say the fire started at 5:30 am and spread quickly.
Multiple trucks were on the scene within minutes and had the fire out by 6:30.
Unfortunately, Escambia Fire Battalion Chief Curt Isakson says it was too late for the children.
The children have been identified as 2-year-old Kayvayna King, 11-year-old Keyonna King, 5-year-old Jeremy Johnson, and 11-year-old Michael King.
Authorities say they could not find a smoke alarm inside the home.
While Escambia County Fire-Rescue and the ATF investigates the cause of the fire.
Gray says her sister was renting the home and did not have insurance. She says the family is asking everyone for their support.
The Red Cross as well as volunteers from the Trauma Intervention programs are assisting the family.
