What’s The Message Behind “Rainbowland”

A Wisconsin primary school’s spring musical was canceled when an administration deemed Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton’s “Rainbowland” unacceptable.

First graders at Heyer Elementary School in Waukesha were upset when the song was omitted from a concert repertoire.

Also cut was Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection,” a song popularized by “The Muppet Movie.”

Superintendent Jim Sebert warned numerous reporters that the song could be problematic;

he claimed the local school board’s “conservative turn” led to regulations that tried to eradicate rainbow imagery that evokes LGBTQ+ themes and pulled the music from the playlist.

Around 2017, Miley told People Magazine that her song represented different races, genders, and religions.

Saying, “A rainbow’s not a rainbow without all the different colors.'”
