Demi Lovato Doesn’t Remember Much Her Time On Disney Channel. It’s Called Dissociation

In a new documentary, Demi Lovato explores the mental health issues of celebrities at a young age, revealing an important topic in trauma research.

In “Child Star” on Hulu and Disney+, the 32-year-old singer admitted she doesn’t recall much of her teenage set time. Lovato, who was dealing with an eating disorder and drug additions, says she didn’t remember working with Raven-Symoné during “Sunny With a Chance.”

Lovato tells her former “Camp Rock” co-star Alyson Stoner that she remembers filming most of the 2008 Disney Channel original but not “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.” Stoner described a similar incident.

“Disassociation: It’s a common thread between all of us,” Lovato adds. Mental health specialists report that trauma survivors commonly experience both dissociation and disassociation. The brain obscures memories and experiences to protect itself.

“It’s a defense mechanism where you shut down to survive,” says psychotherapist Stephanie Sarkis. “Your brain protects itself. Thus, it helps you cope with trauma.”
