Sam Smith’s New Video

Sam Smith dropped the video for his new song “Too Good At Goodbyes” this weekend and it’s pretty good!  Sam can’t help but get emotional in the video, and you may find it impossible to avoid too…so consider yourself warned!

One of my favorite stories I heard about Sam Smith’s process he went through while he wrote the songs for this album was learned during a recent meeting I had with one of his personal friends.  I was told that Sam was living here in the US (on the west coast) and found that the environment was “too happy” for him to write the type of music he wanted (and needed) to write for his sophomore album.  So, Sam packed up and moved back to his native London in the United Kingdom so he could be sad.  LOL!  Sam Smith moved from the US so he could be in a better environment to write more emotionally charged songs.

Now, if I were you I wouldn’t instantly say that the U.K. is a miserable place and makes everyone miserable that lives there.  That can’t possibly true – think about “If You Wanna Be My Lover” from The Spice Girls!

Think about it this way….Sam recorded his first album (you know, the one he one multiple Grammy’s for) while living in the U.K.  He may just be more comfortable there and the environment might make tapping into the emotions he needs easier to come out.

Or, the U.K. is a miserable country and some of the best songs are written from the dreary country.  That DOES make a cooler headline, right?

Even though the story IS TRUE, you’ve got to be a little weird to think the U.K. is the perfect place to write sad songs.  Obviously the perfect country for that is North Korea.

Check out Sam’s video for “Too Good At Goodbyes.”
